Arsenal's Derby Triumph and United's Resurgence: WSL Highlights
In a weekend filled with drama, Arsenal edged past Tottenham in a closely contested north London derby, thanks in part to a controversial penalty. The Gunners came from behind to snatch victory, and while the penalty awarded for a handball by Ella Morris raised eyebrows, it might just be the catalyst Arsenal needed. "It’s been tough. We haven’t got the results we wanted," said Alessia Russo, who scored from the spot. "This was an important win as far as north London derbies go. It was really important and this was a great opportunity to try and turn it around." After seven games, the Gunners finally secured their second league win of the season, despite their shaky start. The performance was far from flawless, especially in the first half, where they appeared lethargic and uninspired. To build on this win, Arsenal must sharpen their passing and maintain the tenacity they showed while defending their lead late in the game. Meanwhile, is Freya Godfrey the next big thing for England? Spanish superstar Alexia Putellas seems to think so. After Godfrey netted in her second consecutive WSL match, Putellas praised her London City Lionesses teammate, saying, "She can arrive where she really wants. I always tell her, she’s a star girl. She will be the future of this club. She has to keep working like she is doing now. She will be the future of England as well as the present." On the other side of Manchester, United’s performance against City was a stark contrast to their previous home outing, where they suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Chelsea. Under new manager Eva Olid, United held their own against the reigning champions, showing notable improvement in both their attacking and defensive play. Olid reflected on the tough loss to Chelsea, stating, "It was a hard week after Chelsea but sometimes you need a difficult moment to happen, to react and see exactly where the problems were or the things we had to solve as a team." Birmingham secured their first WSL win of the season in a matchup against fellow newcomers Charlton, following their commendable point at the Emirates the week before. The Blues dominated the game but were wasteful in front of goal, creating 20 chances but only putting five on target. Eventually, Wilma Leidhammar’s 68th-minute strike sealed the 1-0 victory. Coach Amy Merricks acknowledged the importance of the win, saying, "We needed to pick up three points and we delivered that. I don’t think the performance was our finest. You could feel the caginess across the pitch and that is something we need to work on." In a gripping encounter, Chelsea initially struggled against Crystal Palace but turned the tide with strategic substitutions. After a lackluster first half, manager Sonia Bompastor brought on Erin Cuthbert and Sandy Baltimore, whose impact was immediate. Cuthbert revitalized the midfield, while Baltimore assisted Melvine Malard's goal and later converted a penalty to ensure a 2-1 victory. This depth and tactical flexibility starkly highlighted the difference between Chelsea and Palace. Aston Villa also enjoyed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Everton, marking a successful outing for interim manager Brian Sørensen. Villa raced to a 3-0 lead but had to fend off a late surge from Everton, who pulled two goals back. Sørensen expressed his satisfaction with the performance, noting, "I’m happy; it was overall a good performance. Of course, maybe they got a bit too excited at the end but three points is three points, that’s all that matters." Overall, the weekend delivered a mixture of excitement and tension across the WSL, as teams jostle for position early in the season.
