Alessia Russo breathed new life into Arsenal’s season with a crucial second-half penalty, helping her side rally from a goal down to secure a vital win in the WSL's north London derby.
At a rain-soaked Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Gunners found themselves in familiar territory, trailing after Cathinka Tandberg’s well-placed header. But Georgia Stanway quickly leveled the score, and Russo sealed the comeback with a powerful penalty, allowing Arsenal to defend their lead with determination.
Pressure was mounting on manager Renée Slegers and her squad after a frustrating five-match winless streak. It often felt like they were caught in a cycle of trying to escape the depths of their struggles.
The match started with Arsenal looking a bit unsettled, but they gradually found their rhythm, maintaining possession and posing a threat. However, their season has been marked by an inability to convert dominance into clear chances, often marred by sloppiness and wayward passes.
It was no surprise when Tottenham struck first from a corner. Victoria Pelova delivered a precise ball, and Tandberg managed to rise above her markers, Stanway and Emily Fox, heading it home without much resistance.
Arsenal's response was swift. Just four minutes later, Stanway redeemed herself by connecting with Russo’s cutback, smashing the ball in off the crossbar. The Gunners maintained control, but they couldn’t find another breakthrough before halftime.
The second half brought concern for Spurs when Alice Sombath appeared to sustain a serious injury, leaving on a stretcher and being replaced by Ella Morris, who was making her return from a previous injury.
Following a lengthy stoppage, Russo was denied a close-range effort by a fantastic save from Lize Kop, leading to a moment of frustration for the forward as she held her head in disbelief.
But that frustration quickly turned to joy. From the ensuing corner taken by Kyra Cooney-Cross, Leah Williamson flicked the ball on, and Lisa Baum’s shot rebounded off the post. Spurs’ clearance struck Morris’s arm, prompting the referee to award a penalty.
Russo calmly sent Kop the wrong way, tucking the ball low into the corner of the net. She then celebrated with the passionate Arsenal fans, diving into the corner in sheer delight.
With this victory under their belt, Slegers and her squad will look to build momentum in their upcoming fixtures against Benfica, Aston Villa, and Liverpool, preparing for the tougher challenges ahead against Barcelona, London City Lionesses, and OL Lyonnes.
