Arsenal’s Max Dowman Set for Three-Match Ban After Red Card Appeal Fails
Max Dowman will be sidelined for three games after Arsenal's appeal regarding his red card was rejected by an independent commission. The 16-year-old defender was dismissed for a kick aimed at Harrison Neal during the closing moments of the Carabao Cup match, which ended in a penalty shootout loss for Arsenal following a 1-1 draw. The Gunners hoped to overturn the decision, but the Football Association confirmed on Thursday that both the wrongful dismissal and the severity of the three-match ban were upheld. Consequently, Dowman is set to miss Arsenal's upcoming Premier League encounter with Liverpool, as well as their home fixture against Hull and the away match at Newcastle, all occurring around the international break. The FA will provide a detailed explanation of the commission's ruling in the near future. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking after the match, mentioned he hadn’t yet discussed the incident with Dowman but emphasized the importance of maintaining emotional control during high-pressure situations. In a thrilling cup tie, Fleetwood's goalkeeper, Jay Lynch, became the hero by saving a penalty from Bruno Guimarães. The match turned when 19-year-old defender Conor Haughey scored the decisive penalty, sending Fleetwood through to the quarter-finals in what many consider one of the competition’s biggest upsets. They are now set to face another Premier League team, either Everton or Newcastle. Arsenal struggled in the first half, falling behind to Aaron Loupalo-Bi’s 21st-minute goal after Arteta opted for nine changes to the lineup. The captain, Martin Ødegaard, was brought on at half-time, and Viktor Gyökeres managed to equalize. However, Dowman’s dismissal shifted the momentum, allowing Fleetwood to clinch victory in the shootout.
