Asian Cup Delayed Amidst Unrest in Saudi Arabia
Aston Villa fans can expect to see more of goalkeeper Zion Suzuki this season, thanks to the rescheduling of the Asian Cup. The 2027 edition of the tournament, which was set to take place from January 7 to February 5, has now been pushed back. It will now run from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028. This decision comes on the heels of a tragic missile strike by Yemen's Houthi movement at Riyadh's airport in October, which claimed 13 lives and left over 300 injured. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) released a statement explaining that the rescheduling was necessary due to "exceptional circumstances" arising from ongoing tensions in the region, as well as significant logistical issues and travel disruptions. They also indicated that the revised dates would be submitted to FIFA for final approval. Recently, several events in Saudi Arabia have been called off, including a notable tennis exhibition called the Six Kings Slam that was slated for Riyadh. In response to the Houthi attacks, a Saudi minister has promised a "serious response" to ensure the safety of the nation.
