Bruno Fernandes made his way to Manchester United in January 2020, and it looks like he’s here to stay as captain. Head coach Michael Carrick has stated that Fernandes is "fully committed" to the club and will continue in his leadership role.
After a disappointing 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, Carrick made the bold choice to bench Fernandes, who had voiced concerns about the tactics following a heavy 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League. Despite the pressure on Carrick’s shoulders, he’ll lead the team into Saturday's clash against Chelsea.
While it’s uncertain if Fernandes will reclaim his spot in the starting XI, the two had a constructive discussion at the Carrington training ground on Tuesday, aiming to clear the air and focus on future games.
Carrick made it clear that there’s no debate over Fernandes' captaincy. "We’re clear on the team’s situation and the club’s direction," he explained. "He’s a vital player for us and will continue to be one. We need to push forward positively."
He praised Fernandes for his leadership, stating, "He’s led the team excellently for many games and will keep doing so. There are absolutely no issues in that regard."
As United heads to Chelsea, they’re grappling with an eight-match winless streak—their worst run since the 2015-16 season. The last time they faced a nine-game stretch without a win was back in the 1988-89 season.
It took nearly 40 hours after the Bournemouth loss for the club to clarify Carrick’s future. Discussions involving club owners, including the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, were held before confirming Carrick would remain in charge for the upcoming matches.
It appears he’ll also lead the squad into next week’s Champions League fixture against Roma and the Premier League game against Aston Villa on November 8, after which there's a two-week international break. But Carrick insists he doesn’t need any reassurances about his job.
"I don’t need any assurances from anyone," he stated firmly. "I understand the role and the responsibilities that come with it. I’m here to do my best for the team and to improve things. So, I’m not surprised to still be in this position."
Carrick is focused on the task ahead and determined to steer Manchester United back on course.
