Burnley has officially named Fabio Celestini as their new head coach, just four days after parting ways with Nicky Hayen. The Swiss manager, who is 50 years old, takes the reins with the club languishing in 22nd place in the Championship.
The Clarets have struggled to find their footing this season, managing only one win in their first 12 league matches since their relegation from the Premier League. While the club hasn’t revealed the specifics of Celestini’s contract, they expressed confidence in his ability to adapt and succeed in various football environments.
Diego López, Burnley's chief football officer, emphasized Celestini’s passion and experience, stating, "Fabio brings the passion, experience and knowledge we were looking for. He showed extraordinary determination and conviction to come to Burnley. We want people who truly want to be here and help this club grow. Fabio is a clear example of that."
Celestini’s most recent managerial position was at CSKA Moscow, a role he exited in May. He also boasts a successful history with Swiss clubs Lugano, Luzern, Sion, and Basel, where he notably transformed the team from last place to a league and cup double within 18 months.
In his first comments as head coach, Celestini shared his vision for the club, stating, "I look at Burnley and I see a club with big potential and players with real quality, who can help us achieve our supporters’ ambitions. I know the situation we are in, and I have lived it before. Our supporters deserve to see a team playing with belief from the first whistle."
A seasoned former midfielder, Celestini spent a decade playing in France and Spain and earned 35 caps for Switzerland. He is set to lead his first match this Saturday at home against Portsmouth.
