Burnley Football Club has made a significant change at the top, bringing in Fabio Celestini as their new head coach just days after parting ways with Nicky Hayen. The Clarets are hoping that Celestini can reignite their season after a rough start in the Championship.
At 50, Celestini arrives with an impressive resume, having guided FC Basel to a domestic double, clinching both the Swiss Super League and the Swiss Cup in the 2024-25 season. Most recently, he managed CSKA Moscow, where he celebrated winning the Russian Super Cup.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Celestini stated, "I look at Burnley and I see a club with big potential and players with real quality, who can help us achieve our supporters' ambitions." He understands the challenges ahead, acknowledging the current struggles of the team. "Our supporters deserve to see a team playing with belief from the first whistle," he added.
Burnley’s situation is concerning, as they currently sit 22nd in the Championship table with just one league win this season. Their misfortunes have extended from a troubled Premier League campaign last year, and they haven't won a home league match in over a year.
The club’s recent leadership shake-up included the appointment of Diego Lopez as director of football, tasked with finding a new manager after Hayen's departure following a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Lincoln City. "Fabio brings the passion, experience and knowledge we were looking for," Lopez remarked, highlighting Celestini’s strong commitment to the club's future.
While the specific terms of Celestini's contract remain undisclosed, his background as a former midfielder, who earned 35 caps for Switzerland, adds to his credentials. His managerial journey began with Italian side Terracina, and he has also coached Lausanne, Lucerne, Lugano, and Sion before his stint at CSKA Moscow, which ended in May.
As Burnley aims to turn their fortunes around, all eyes will be on Celestini to inspire a revival and restore faith among fans.
