Carrick's Future Uncertain as Manchester United Management Meets
Michael Carrick made an appearance at Manchester United's training ground on Monday, just as key figures in the club's hierarchy were meeting to discuss his future. Carrick arrived around 1:50 PM to observe the under-21s in a private match. Meanwhile, sporting director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada gathered at Carrington in the wake of United's crushing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, which has left Carrick's job precariously hanging in the balance. The loss extended a dismal streak to eight games without a win, with Carrick's side managing just two victories this season. Currently, United sits in 16th place in the Premier League, merely a point above the relegation zone. If the club decides to part ways with the 45-year-old, Eddie Howe appears to be the frontrunner for the role. Reports suggest that Wilcox has already reached out to the former Newcastle manager, who is reportedly open to the opportunity if discussions progress. Howe would come at a lower cost compared to Unai Emery, another candidate who has garnered interest but comes with a hefty £20 million price tag from Aston Villa. Julian Nagelsmann, the ex-Germany and Bayern Munich coach, is also in the mix, particularly favored by Christopher Vivell, United's head of recruitment. However, Wilcox's influence may weigh heavily in decisions, especially with Sir Jim Ratcliffe overseeing football operations. Antonio Conte, who recently parted ways with Napoli, is yet another name being considered. In a surprising move, Carrick benched Bruno Fernandes for the Bournemouth match, citing “pure football reasons” amidst the captain's public criticism of Carrick's tactics following a 4-1 defeat to Como. Fernandes, who remained on the bench during the game, faced boos from frustrated fans along with his teammates. Interestingly, on Monday, Fernandes liked an Instagram post that read: “Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care,” highlighting the turmoil within the team. In other news, Ineos, owned by Ratcliffe, is reportedly looking to sell FC Lausanne-Sport, currently languishing at the bottom of the Swiss top division. Ineos did not provide a comment when approached.
