Celtic and Rangers Await Verdict on Stadium Closure Appeals
The tension is palpable in Glasgow as Rangers and Celtic await a ruling from the Scottish FA appellate tribunal regarding their appeals related to stadium closures. Both clubs presented their cases earlier this week, and now, the tribunal will take some time to deliberate before announcing the fate of these sanctions. The closure ruling was handed down in late August, stemming from chaotic scenes at the conclusion of last season’s quarter-final clash at Ibrox, a match ultimately won by Celtic in a penalty shoot-out. Along with the order to play their next home Scottish Cup matches without fans, both clubs are also contesting hefty fines of £100,000 due to the violence that marred the event. The incidents included fans launching fireworks and other projectiles onto the pitch, resulting in injuries to police officers and a total of 43 arrests by late August. Both clubs have been warned that they risk facing a second match behind closed doors if fan misconduct continues. An independent review released in July highlighted how close the situation came to escalating into a violent confrontation. Mark Blackbourne, who led the investigation, pointed out shortcomings from both clubs and criticized the SFA for its lack of decisive action regarding crowd control. In a move to ensure safety, an agreement was struck in September that prohibits away fans from attending any of this season's Old Firm derbies in the SPFL competitions. With emotions running high, both clubs are now left to ponder the tribunal's decision.
