Colby Donovan is making waves at Celtic, stepping in for the sidelined Alistair Johnston and proving his worth. Now, the club has rewarded him with a contract extension that keeps him at Parkhead until 2031.
Manager Martin O'Neill is bullish about Donovan’s potential, confident he’s on track for a “very big future.” At just 20 years old, Donovan has already made 15 starts this season, marking a promising rise since his debut in August of last year.
Donovan received his first call-up to the Scotland national squad in September, although he didn’t make an appearance in the Nations League matches under new coach Sebastien Pocognoli. Still, O’Neill believes his contributions have been invaluable.
“He has come in when we needed him, given everything for our cause,” O'Neill praised, highlighting Donovan's “tremendous attitude.” The manager also noted how much this deal means to Donovan and his family, emphasizing the player’s deep affection for Celtic.
“I’m sure he will continue to progress and enjoy a very big future in the game,” O’Neill added, expressing delight that Donovan envisions his long-term career at Celtic.
Last season, Donovan made 27 appearances and has quickly become the go-to option for O'Neill in Johnston’s absence.
“I've loved every single minute,” Donovan reflected on his time at the club. “But it doesn’t stop now. I’m just going to keep kicking on.”
He understands the competitive nature of a young player at Celtic, especially with the high-profile signings the club makes. “When I was a kid, I knew I could come through and do it,” he said, showcasing his unwavering belief in his abilities.
