Lauren James is set to miss several weeks of action after sustaining a hamstring injury during Chelsea's dominant 6-0 victory over Charlton last weekend.
Chelsea's manager Sonia Bompastor confirmed that the 25-year-old forward will be sidelined for at least five matches, which includes an important clash against Manchester City next week and the upcoming home game against Everton this Saturday.
This injury also casts a shadow over James' chances of being fit for England's World Cup qualifying play-off against Ukraine in December.
After exiting the game in the 35th minute, James received a scan that revealed the extent of her injury. Bompastor stated, "The only one who will be missing is LJ. She has an injury in her hamstring, so we won't see her until the end of this block."
On a brighter note, Chelsea welcomed back midfielder Lexi Potter, who missed the trip to Charlton but made her England debut last month.
Despite the setback of losing James, Chelsea remains at the top of the Women’s Super League table, performing well with and without her this season.
Bompastor acknowledged James' talent, saying, "Of course we know how good Lauren is for us and for the team. My job is to find solutions when some players are unavailable."
She pointed out the team’s ability to score from various players, highlighting the last match where many contributors were involved in the attack. "Every player who was on the pitch had a shot on goal, which shows our depth and versatility. Now, I need to ensure we continue to find ways to win without LJ on the field."
