Decision Day Drama: Playoff Spots and the Wooden Spoon on the Line in MLS

The MLS regular season is nearing its conclusion, and there’s still a lot at stake as teams vie for playoff spots and the infamous Wooden Spoon. Mark your calendars for Saturday as eight matches kick off at 4pm ET on the East Coast, followed by another seven games later in the evening on the West Coast. It’s shaping up to be a thrilling Decision Day.
Nashville SC has already secured the Supporters’ Shield, so let’s shift our focus to the teams at the bottom of the standings. Sporting Kansas City has had a rough season and almost clinched the Wooden Spoon last week. However, a last-minute penalty save allowed them to draw against FC Dallas, keeping their hopes alive to avoid finishing last. With Decision Day approaching, SKC trails second-to-last place Montréal by just three points.
If Sporting Kansas City can snag a win against San Diego and Montréal falters against Vancouver, they could end up tied on points at 26. Normally, leagues would use goal difference to break ties, but MLS has its own quirky rules. Here, it comes down to wins, and SKC would edge ahead with seven compared to Montréal’s six. It’s been a challenging journey for KC, but at least there’s a flicker of hope as the regular season wraps up.
On the other side of the standings, Miami is focused on securing the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. A victory over Charlotte guarantees that spot, while anything less puts them at the mercy of New England’s results. Fortunately for Miami, they have already qualified for the Concacaf Champions Cup, giving them a chance to redeem themselves after their early exit last season.
More intriguing than playoff seeding is Lionel Messi’s pursuit of the Golden Boot. With 26 goals to his name, he holds a four-goal lead over his closest rival, putting him on track to make history as the first player to win the award in consecutive seasons.
The Eastern Conference playoff picture is almost set, thanks to a shocking late equalizer from Montréal last Saturday. This result dashed New York City FC’s dreams of replicating last year’s playoff run, marking only the third time in their history that they’ll miss the postseason. Their struggles were exacerbated by the absence of star striker Alonso Martínez, who couldn’t help secure crucial victories.
New York Red Bulls also find themselves on the outside looking in after failing to capitalize on their talented homegrown roster, featuring promising players like Julian Hall and Adri Mehmeti. Despite some impressive performances under new head coach Michael Bradley, a lack of veteran support may have cost them a deeper playoff run. Meanwhile, Toronto FC’s season ended with a defeat to Atlanta United, marking their sixth consecutive year without a playoff appearance under Robin Fraser.
There’s still much to be decided with six teams competing for three remaining playoff spots. The LA Galaxy, currently sitting in seventh, have managed to stay afloat despite missing star midfielder Riqui Puig, who has been recovering from surgery. They face a crucial match against Real Salt Lake, who are in 11th place but still have a chance to secure a postseason berth after a midseason dip.
The Portland Timbers, in eighth, are on a roll since parting ways with coach Phil Neville, racking up wins against playoff-bound teams. They’ll travel to Austin, who have already been eliminated, in hopes of continuing their resurgence. The Colorado Rapids, sitting ninth, pulled off an upset against Vancouver but face a daunting task against FC Dallas. Meanwhile, the Seattle Sounders, in tenth, are on the brink of missing the playoffs for the second time ever and need a win against Los Angeles FC to stay alive.
Finally, Minnesota United, currently in 12th place, managed to stave off elimination with a recent victory but will need to defeat San Jose and get some help elsewhere to sneak into the playoffs after a dismal run of just one win in 18 league matches.
