Colby Donovan, Lennon Miller, and James Wilson have made the move from Scotland's senior team to the under-21 setup, and head coach Tony Docherty couldn't be happier.
The trio, featuring Celtic's right-back Donovan, Udinese's midfielder Miller, and Heart of Midlothian's striker Wilson, has been called up for upcoming friendlies against Ukraine and the United States in Spain. They join Manchester United's Tyler Fletcher, who transitioned to Docherty’s squad after his World Cup experience.
"I'm really pleased to have players who bring that A squad experience; they truly set the tone for the team," Docherty expressed.
These players are pivotal in establishing leadership and creating a strong team identity. "You could see their impact during the last camp when I returned from the A squad. Players like James and Findlay have raised the bar, and Findlay's recent form earned him another call-up to the senior side.
I've been in touch with Lennon and Colby to discuss their roles moving forward. If they're not getting minutes with the A squad, it’s crucial they join us. We want to maintain a consistent structure, and this gives them a chance to showcase their skills.
Miller, who made a summer move from Motherwell to Udinese, had hoped to secure a spot in the senior squad but now finds himself in a competitive midfield.
"I had a long chat with Lennon about his situation," Docherty noted. "Just look at Barney Stewart from the last camp; he scored three goals and is now making waves with West Brom.
Colby simply wants to play, and it’s great that he’s eager to join the U21s. It’s not us imposing this on him; it’s a mutual decision where he expressed his desire to impress.
Additionally, St Mirren’s Eseosa Sule has been added to the squad as Docherty gears up for a new European qualifying campaign, with 16 players from his previous squad aging out.
Meanwhile, Rangers' Kyle Glasgow will drop down to the Under-19 squad for three qualifying matches. The 16-year-old, currently on loan at Alloa Athletic, will team up with his older brother Euan, who is on loan at Edinburgh City from Hearts.
The squad features goalkeepers Sam Kane (Derby County), Rory Mahady (Leeds United), and Aidan Rice (Dumbarton). Defenders include Daniel Armer (Manchester United) and Murray Campbell (Burnley) among others, while the midfield boasts talent like Calum Adamson (Raith Rovers) and Tyler Fletcher (Manchester United). Up front, Findlay Marshall (Aberdeen) and James Wilson (Heart of Midlothian) are set to make their mark.
