Drama Unfolds as Kansas City Advances and Utah Shocks San Diego
Michelle Cooper stepped up when it mattered most, converting a penalty in extra time to secure a 1-0 triumph for the Kansas City Current against Angel City in the NWSL playoffs on Sunday. With this victory, the fourth-seed Current will advance to the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of the quarter-final clash between top-seeded Gotham FC and eighth-seeded Seattle Reign FC. Kansas City continues to showcase their strength at home, maintaining their unbeaten record from the regular season into the playoffs. Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson was impressive, notching five saves during regulation. The turning point came just four minutes into extra time when Kansas City’s Izzy Rodriguez sent a corner kick into the box. Amid a scramble, defender Kayla Sharples went down after colliding with Anderson and Ary Borges, leading to a penalty being awarded to the Current, which Cooper confidently converted. The match was a physical battle, with a total of 25 fouls shared between the teams. Angel City picked up three yellow cards, starting with Sveindís Jónsdóttir's foul on Gabrielle Robinson in the 13th minute. Borges also received a yellow in the 58th minute for a high challenge on Vanessa DiBernardo, while Kansas City’s only caution went to Temwa Chawinga in the 114th minute. In a thrilling upset, the seventh-seeded Utah Royals stunned the second-seeded San Diego Wave with a 1-0 victory in Friday night’s quarter-final. Cloé Lacasse delivered a brilliant low cross that Kiana Palacios expertly finished in the 30th minute, marking Utah’s first lead over San Diego in any competition this season. Goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn was a standout performer for the Royals, making four saves to record her sixth clean sheet of the campaign. "Unbelievable, it’s just everything you could hope for," McGlynn expressed, still in disbelief after the match. The Royals ended a four-match winless streak and will now prepare to face either the third-seeded Washington Spirit or the sixth-seeded Portland Thorns in the semi-finals. Washington and Portland will compete in the final quarter-final on Sunday. Both teams faced challenges with injuries, as San Diego midfielder Kimmi Ascanio was sidelined with a thigh issue, while Utah's Mina Tanaka was ruled out due to a previously questionable hamstring injury. Despite dominating possession with 62% and outshooting Utah 16 to 8, San Diego couldn't find the back of the net, extending their playoff woes with four straight losses.
