Edinburgh Showdown: Hearts and Hibs Ready for High-Stakes Semi-Final
This Sunday, the stage is set at Hampden for a fierce Edinburgh rivalry as Hearts and Hibernian gear up for a crucial semi-final in the Premier Sports Cup. Hearts fans snapped up their ticket allocation in just three days, with over 23,000 supporters expected to fill the stands. In contrast, Hibs supporters are feeling the pressure, with a few empty seats signaling their unease. Still, more than 18,000 will show up to back a team currently languishing near the bottom of the Premiership. Hearts sit comfortably in third place and enjoyed their third consecutive derby victory back in September. They’ve also maintained a flawless record in Hampden derbies, winning all their Scottish Cup encounters at the venue. The rivalry dates back to Christmas Day 1875, but the first competitive clash at Hampden didn’t occur until 2006. That match saw Paul Hartley net a hat-trick in a 4-0 win for Hearts, while Hibs were reduced to nine men. Fast forward to 2012, and Hearts delivered a 5-1 thrashing in the final, with Rudi Skacel scoring twice. Recent meetings have been more closely contested, with Hearts edging out Hibs 2-1 in both the 2020 and 2022 semi-finals, the latter marred by another Hibs red card and a missed penalty. This semi-final on November 1, 2026, marks the first competitive matchup between managers Wouter Vrancken and Marink Reedijk, who both previously managed in Belgium. Vrancken led Sint-Truiden to their best finish in 60 years, while Reedijk enjoyed a remarkable unbeaten run with Beveren. Reedijk, still searching for his first win with Hibs after a draw and three losses, is implementing a new style at Easter Road but faces challenges. The team has struggled defensively and has yet to keep a clean sheet in the league, while their attacking efforts have dwindled in recent matches. Hearts, on the other hand, are in fine form, having recorded 22 shots on target in their last four outings, including a stunning 7-1 loss to Celtic. They’ve scored 24 league goals, significantly outpacing Hibs’ tally of just 11. Vrancken emphasized the need for his team to channel their energy effectively on the pitch, acknowledging the unique circumstances of this all-or-nothing clash. "It’s a different game with a new manager and a new style," he noted. "We need to stay focused on this one." Reedijk is embracing the excitement of a derby that carries the weight of a semi-final, promising some surprises along the way. He remarked, "It's not just a derby; it’s one step from a final, making it doubly thrilling." For Hearts, winning silverware would be a significant boost after coming agonizingly close in the title race last season. They haven’t celebrated a trophy since their 2012 triumph and last lifted the League Cup back in 1962, while Hibs have claimed it three times since. Despite injury woes on both sides, the return of veteran Martin Boyle, who has scored five derby goals, offers Hibs a glimmer of hope. Boyle dazzled in the 2021 semi-finals with a hat-trick against Rangers and currently leads the club with three league goals. Hearts boast several players scoring consistently, including Claudio Braga and Calvin Miller, who both netted five in a recent thrilling draw with Rangers. However, fatigue may play a role, especially with European fixtures adding to their schedule. The question remains: can Hibs hold their ground long enough to challenge Hearts’ stamina? They cannot afford another sending-off like in their last derby, where a red card dashed their hopes after they had pulled a goal back.
