Ellie Carpenter: Chelsea's Unsung Hero Shines Bright

Ellie Carpenter has been a constant presence in Chelsea's Women’s Super League campaign this season, featuring in every match so far.
When Chelsea found themselves level with Roma at halftime, head coach Sonia Bompastor made a bold choice to substitute a defender for a striker. Some of her coaching staff raised eyebrows at the decision, but Bompastor's faith in Carpenter paid off when the Australian found the net just six minutes later, helping Chelsea secure a 2-0 victory.
"I made the final decision and someone in my technical staff said: 'But we need to score, and you are bringing on a defensive player?'" Bompastor recalled with a laugh. "It turned out to be a great move. I was confident Ellie would create plenty in the second half."
So, what has contributed to Carpenter's standout season with Chelsea?
The Blues sit at the top of the Women’s Super League, having only dropped points during their opening weekend against Aston Villa. Carpenter has been a vital cog in the team, starting nearly every match and scoring four goals from her full-back or wing-back role.
In a commanding 6-0 triumph over Charlton, Carpenter not only scored in the 13th minute but also topped the charts for tackles (three) and ball recoveries (12) among her teammates. Impressively, she has made 56 touches in the opposition box this season, trailing only a few elite players in the league.
Former England striker Ellen White praised Carpenter’s impact on the Women’s Football Weekly podcast, stating, "She has been brilliant this season with her attacking prowess. She trusts her fellow defenders and midfielders, which gives her the freedom to push forward."
Carpenter joined Chelsea from Lyon in 2025, where she previously worked under Bompastor, winning the Champions League in 2022. Known for her attacking instincts, she has comfortably settled into the right wing-back position, allowing Chelsea to bolster their defense while maintaining their scoring threat.
Chelsea’s defense has been rock-solid, conceding just four goals this season, the fewest in the league. Carpenter is not just a key player going forward; she ranks second in successful tackles within the squad.
Not only does Carpenter lead Chelsea in touches in the opposition box, but she also tops the squad for successful passes in the final third. In her first WSL season, she faced criticism for being wasteful with crosses, yet Bompastor believes she’s improved significantly, now contributing more directly to goals with four scored and one assisted.
"Ellie is performing at an excellent level. She even has goals from her left foot, which is quite rare," Bompastor remarked. "She impacts the game in both phases—defensively and offensively. Her mindset is always to push forward, and her technical skills are improving. She can deliver fantastic crosses and finish clinically. It's hard to imagine her having a greater impact than she does right now."
