Emmanuel Latte Lath's journey from the streets of Ivory Coast to the bright lights of Europe is nothing short of remarkable. At just eight years old, as he boarded a plane to Italy, he felt a swirl of emotions, especially fear as he encountered a world far different from his own.
The former Middlesbrough striker, now starring for Union Berlin, recalls the moment he learned he would be moving to Europe. "I was a bit scared seeing people different than me," he admitted to BBC Sport, reflecting on a pivotal transition in his young life.
Leaving behind friends and family was tough, but reuniting with his father in Italy provided a fresh start for their relationship. "It was important because when I was born, we weren't that close," the 27-year-old explained. His father's journey to Italy in search of a better life had made communication a challenge. Seeing him again transformed Latte Lath’s outlook, inspiring him to forge a new path.
Settling into a new country had its challenges, but the memories of playing street football with friends in Africa kept him grounded. "We built our team and played against others, no pressure, just fun," he reminisced. "It was competitive, often ending in fights, but those were some of the best moments. I really missed that."
Latte Lath’s early experiences on the pitch became the foundation for his football career in Italy. He had never worn proper boots or played for an official team before arriving in Europe, but that quickly changed. "I was eager to learn and showcase my talent," he said, recalling the hurdles of adapting to a new language and environment.
His hard work paid off when he joined Atalanta's academy in 2015. Just two years later, he made headlines by scoring against Juventus in the Coppa Italia during his third appearance. "It was unbelievable, an unforgettable moment," he shared, still feeling the thrill of that accomplishment.
However, that goal would be his only one for Atalanta, as he faced a tough road ahead, spending five years on loan at eight different clubs—a journey many young talents in Italy know all too well. "Italian football is tactical and rule-heavy, which makes it hard to express yourself," he reflected, noting the challenges of breaking through.
After a standout loan spell with St. Gallen in Switzerland, Latte Lath caught the eye of Middlesbrough, making the move to the Championship in 2023. There, he met manager Michael Carrick, who played a crucial role in boosting his confidence. "He was calm and knew how to support us in tough moments," Latte Lath remarked on Carrick’s influence during a pivotal time in his career.
That confidence translated into impressive stats—29 goals in 67 appearances—leading to a record-breaking transfer to Atlanta United, where he became the most expensive signing in MLS history. Unfortunately, his time in the U.S. didn’t meet expectations, prompting another move back to Europe on loan to Union Berlin.
Now in the German capital, Latte Lath is embracing the vibrant culture and passionate fanbase. "The fans' passion is crazy, and it gives me an extra boost on the pitch," he said, clearly excited about this new chapter. "Berlin is huge, and I love the mix of cultures. I think I fit in well because I grew up surrounded by diverse friends and experiences."
