Eoin Kenny's Family Ties Take a Backseat in Northern Ireland Call-Up
Eoin Kenny is making headlines as he joins the Northern Ireland senior squad, but his family background isn’t what’s driving the decision. Michael O'Neill, Northern Ireland's manager, has made it clear that he focused solely on Kenny's abilities rather than his lineage, which includes his father, former Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny. The young forward, currently with Portsmouth after a summer move from Dundalk, has been making waves. Born in Northern Ireland while his dad was managing Derry City, Eoin initially represented the Republic at under-19 level before switching allegiance to Northern Ireland, where he's already made 11 appearances for the under-21s and even captained the side against Greece last month. "To me, his background isn’t a big deal. I just see him as a player," O'Neill stated. "He’s enjoyed his time in the Northern Ireland setup, and after a solid run with the under-21s, he’s earned this chance." O'Neill believes Kenny is excited about the opportunity. "What matters most is that he wants to be here and play international football." Northern Ireland is gearing up for their Nations League matches against Ukraine on November 14 and Hungary on November 17, with live coverage available on BBC platforms. Interestingly, while O'Neill and Stephen Kenny share a history that dates back to their League of Ireland days, there was no direct conversation between them prior to Kenny's call-up. Instead, O'Neill relied on feedback from Tommy Wright, the under-21 manager, who has been instrumental in Kenny's integration into the national setup. "Tommy was the one who brought him into the fold, and he’s been a positive influence on Eoin's development," O'Neill explained. "I had some awareness of him through Stephen and his time in the League of Ireland, but it was Tommy who alerted me to his eligibility and performance." Kenny has made just one appearance for Portsmouth in the Championship, but O'Neill is looking forward to observing him closely during the upcoming international window. It’s a crucial chance for players to transition from the under-21s to the senior squad, something O'Neill is keen to reinforce. "We need to show players there’s a pathway beyond under-21 football, which often gets overlooked," he said. The topic of international allegiance has been hot lately, especially with young talents like Arsenal's Ceadach O'Neill making headlines. After securing his fourth cap for Northern Ireland against Georgia last month, he’s firmly tied to the team despite the Republic's interest in having him switch sides. O'Neill remains focused on his own players, like Conor Haughey, who recently scored the winning penalty in a surprising EFL Cup victory over Arsenal. "We haven't had to address any transfer discussions with him yet; he’s part of our under-21 squad and on our radar for the senior team," O'Neill confirmed. Having witnessed Haughey shine in that match, O'Neill was left impressed. "I typically leave matches early, but I stuck around for this one, especially for the penalties. I was surprised to see Conor take the fifth kick, but it showed great confidence from a young player. He held his own against some tough competition, and that’s a big step for him and Fleetwood."
