Falkirk pulled off a stunning upset against Celtic, winning 2-0 and marking their first victory over the Hoops since 2007. Martin O'Neill's side missed a golden opportunity to edge seven points clear in the Scottish Premiership title race, leaving them frustrated once again.
The Bairns came out firing, with Ethan Ross scoring just three minutes into the match. Ryan Strain sent a cross into the box, and Cameron Carter-Vickers, in an uncharacteristic mistake, diverted the ball right to Ross, who made no mistake in finding the net.
Celtic's Scott Bain was tested early on, making crucial saves against Camilo Duran and Hasseim Hassan. But Falkirk didn't let up, and Scott Tanser doubled their lead before the half, brilliantly evading Carter-Vickers and smashing the ball home.
After the break, Falkirk thought they had a third goal, but VAR intervened, ruling it out due to a handball by Jacob Murrell. Celtic ramped up the pressure in the latter stages but found Bain in the way, as he made an impressive ten saves throughout the match.
Despite their dominance in possession, Celtic struggled to break through, and this defeat marked their sixth in ten matches this season. They remain four points clear of Rangers, albeit having played an extra game.
Celtic’s poor run of form has sparked debate about the team's direction under O'Neill. Sky Sports pundit Chris Sutton pointed out that the side has struggled consistently this season, questioning the effectiveness of the coaching staff and the overall team setup.
O'Neill expressed his frustration post-match, acknowledging that while they conceded two goals, they could have easily scored six or seven. He praised the performance of Falkirk's goalkeeper, who made remarkable saves that kept his team in the game.
Despite the loss, O'Neill remained optimistic, reminding everyone that Celtic is still at the top of the league and capable of bouncing back. He acknowledged the challenges of the season but emphasized the team's history of overcoming obstacles.
Meanwhile, Falkirk manager John McGlynn celebrated a monumental team effort. He credited his players for their relentless work rate and defensive discipline, which were key to their success against the champions. With four wins in a row and three consecutive clean sheets, McGlynn's squad is riding high on confidence, especially with the support of their home crowd.
