Barry Murphy, a stalwart of Barnsley Football Club, has passed away at the age of 86. Murphy dedicated his entire 16-year league career to the Tykes, making an impressive 569 appearances between 1962 and 1978 after joining from South Shields. Even after hanging up his boots, he remained a vital part of the club, taking on a coaching role under manager Allan Clarke starting in 1975. In 1980, Murphy followed Clarke to Leeds United, where he contributed until 1984. Affectionately known as 'Spud', he made history as Barnsley’s first-ever substitute in 1965. He also set an incredible record with 182 consecutive games and was honored as the club’s player of the year in 1972. After retiring, Murphy frequently returned to Oakwell, making guest appearances and leading charity events for the club he loved. Barnsley’s social media account expressed their sorrow, stating: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Barry Murphy, aged 86. An iconic full-back who was our record-appearance holder with 569 games for the Reds. Barry was a true Barnsley legend." His legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of fans and the fabric of the club.
