Harry Kane made headlines when he joined Bayern Munich from Tottenham in August 2023, and now he’s back in the spotlight after winning the Ballon d'Or. The striker has boldly stated that he would gladly exchange his newly acquired trophy for a Champions League winner's medal.
At 33, Kane achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first Englishman in over 20 years to secure the prestigious award, finishing ahead of stars like Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal. Yet, despite this significant personal accolade, Kane insists that his sights are firmly set on team success, particularly as Bayern gears up for their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.
“Winning team trophies is why we play football. The team aspect is crucial,” Kane remarked during a press conference. His recent Ballon d'Or win was a career highlight, but he craves the collective joy of celebrating a Champions League triumph with his teammates.
When pressed about a choice between lifting the European Cup and claiming the Ballon d'Or, Kane didn’t hesitate. “I would choose the Champions League, but I have the opportunity to do both - let’s see what happens,” he said, underscoring that while individual accolades are significant, the emotional experience of shared victories with teammates is unparalleled.
Kane was celebrated at the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London, becoming only the fifth Englishman to achieve this honor, joining greats like Michael Owen and Sir Bobby Charlton. The Bayern Munich faithful also paid tribute to their star striker ahead of the highly anticipated Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund.
“It’s been a rollercoaster since the celebrations,” Kane shared, reflecting on the highs and lows of his journey. He scored an impressive 73 goals last season, contributing to Bayern’s domestic treble. “It was a huge high for me and for the club, one of the best feelings I’ve ever had. But we’ve faced challenges that have brought us closer together.”
On the contractual front, Kane mentioned that discussions about a new deal with Bayern are progressing well. He is “extremely close” to finalizing an agreement after joining the club for a hefty £86.4 million. “Most of the significant issues have been resolved, and we’re happy with that,” he stated, adding that minor details are still being worked out.
Kane is optimistic, saying, “I would say it’s more days than weeks. The conversations have gone well today, and hopefully, we can wrap things up soon.”
Meanwhile, Bayern is navigating a challenging period with head coach Vincent Kompany sidelined after collapsing during a training session. Although he has been released from the hospital, his return date remains uncertain, leaving assistant Aaron Danks to manage the team.
Kane acknowledged the impact of Kompany’s absence but emphasized that the squad is adapting well. “We’re missing our coach, but this gives everyone a chance to step up. There’s still a long way to go,” he concluded.
