Ousmane Dembele, a name synonymous with football stardom, has forged a surprising bond with Winchester City, a small non-league team in Hampshire. It sounds bizarre, but this connection has blossomed into a unique relationship fueled by the popular game Football Manager.
In this virtual realm, Dembele took Winchester City on an exhilarating journey, propelling them to the pinnacle of English football while he was busy representing France at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. A memorable moment captured on social media shows Dembele and teammate Antoine Griezmann joking about bringing the World Cup to Winchester, highlighting this quirky link.
"We had some fun banter back then, but it faded away after that," reflected Winchester City's manager, Craig Davis, in an interview with BBC Radio Solent.
However, the recent Ballon d'Or ceremony in London rekindled the excitement between the Paris Saint-Germain star and the eighth-tier club. Dembele, now 29, secured the seventh spot in this year's awards, while Harry Kane took home the coveted trophy.
Davis explained how one of his media team members brought a Winchester shirt to the red carpet event, snapping a photo that included Dembele in the background. The PSG winger responded with emojis, sparking a flurry of attention. "It might be a stretch, but we’re claiming it!" Davis quipped.
Currently, Winchester City plays in the Isthmian South Central Division, where they sit third in the league standings after an impressive run, winning five of their last six matches. Their sights are firmly set on climbing back up to the Southern League Premier Division One South.
When asked if there might be an opportunity for Dembele to visit or even play for the club, Davis expressed enthusiasm. "This has definitely reignited our hopes. We’ll do our best to keep the conversation going. Who knows?" he said with a chuckle. "But I doubt a seven-day notice will be enough to get him to sign on the dotted line!"
