Infantino Faces a New Rival as Tashima Declares Candidacy for FIFA Presidency
Gianni Infantino is about to face his first significant challenge for the FIFA presidency. Kohzo Tashima, the honorary president of the Japan Football Association, has revealed his intention to run in the upcoming election scheduled for March. Tashima is not just a figurehead; he’s a FIFA Council member with a solid backing from the Japan Football Association. He’s expected to gather the five endorsements necessary to officially enter the race. UEFA is keen on preventing Infantino from continuing his reign and is likely to rally behind Tashima if he stands alone against the incumbent. This could also open doors for Tashima to gain traction with anti-Infantino groups from both the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF. The Asian Football Confederation's stance is crucial. Recently, its president, Sheikh Salman, flipped his support back to Infantino at the confederation's Congress. However, that doesn’t guarantee Infantino's dominance across the continent, as Tashima could still capture votes from various Asian nations. With 211 members in FIFA, a candidate needs 106 votes to win. The clock is ticking, as November 18 is the deadline for candidates to declare their intentions. Tashima's background is impressive. A former Japan international, he has coached the Under-17 and Under-20 national teams and has held several key positions within the JFA, including general secretary and president, along with a role on the AFC's executive committee. Sky Sports News' Kaveh Solhekol weighed in, stating, "Kozo Tashima certainly gives Gianni Infantino something to worry about. I think Infantino would much prefer to stand unopposed." He also highlighted the complexities of the election process, noting how crucial it is to secure the necessary backing from national associations. Tashima is likely to earn significant support from Europe, counting on nearly all of UEFA's 55 votes. While the AFC has pledged its allegiance to Infantino, not all Asian nations may follow suit, potentially giving Tashima a chance to gather some votes there, as well as in CONCACAF. The next couple of weeks will be pivotal. Speculation is rife about whether other candidates might enter the fray, including the legendary Arsene Wenger, FIFA's chief of global football development. His potential candidacy could dramatically shift the dynamics of the race. Wenger's entry would undoubtedly make headlines, and while he might not have enough support to dethrone Infantino, his presence could stir things up significantly. The FIFA presidential elections are known for their unpredictability, as evidenced by Infantino's own surprising rise to power a decade ago. Currently, Infantino remains the frontrunner, despite ongoing controversies. But as history has shown, unexpected developments can change everything in FIFA politics. Keep an eye on this race; it’s shaping up to be anything but dull.
