Iraola Sparks New Life at Liverpool Ahead of Arsenal Clash
Liverpool has been on a roll lately, notching up nine wins and three draws in their last 13 matches under the guidance of Andoni Iraola. It's been a long time since Arsenal last triumphed at Anfield—back in 2012, to be precise. The last time this fixture unfolded, Mikel Arteta was on the pitch for the Gunners. Fast forward to now, and Arteta, a Premier League-winning manager, faces a daunting task as he leads his team into Liverpool's fortress this Sunday at 16:30 GMT. The Reds are beginning to hit their stride under Iraola, buoyed by a passionate Anfield crowd. Since suffering their only defeat of the season against Manchester City on October 11, Liverpool has secured five consecutive wins across all competitions, a feat they haven’t matched since last season. With Arsenal coming off a surprising Carabao Cup exit to League Two side Fleetwood, Liverpool has the chance to make a significant statement to the rest of the league. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the Reds are the most formidable challengers to Arsenal, but Iraola remains cautious, stating it’s too early to focus on the standings. This match will serve as a litmus test for Iraola’s progress at Liverpool. A win would narrow the gap to Arsenal to just three points, while a loss could widen it to nine points after nine matches. Last season, Anfield lost its intimidating aura, making matches a less thrilling experience for fans. However, the connection between the supporters and the team has reignited recently. Liverpool's comeback victory against Villarreal was marked by an electric atmosphere, and subsequent wins against Brighton and Chelsea have only added to the optimism. Iraola acknowledged the unique atmosphere at Anfield, saying, "We have a big advantage over other teams because this atmosphere we can create is special." New signings like Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola, and Florian Wirtz are blending in well, while stars like Cody Gakpo and Alexis Mac Allister have stepped up their game compared to last season. Defensively, Ronald Araujo has quickly become a fan favorite, and Jeremy Jacquet has made a seamless transition. Iraola’s increasing trust in young talents such as Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni, Lewis Koumas, and James McConnell is also notable. Iraola has employed a strategy of significant rotation, making three or more changes to the starting XI in nine straight games. This approach is crucial as he adapts to the demands of managing a team that plays twice a week. “It’s true that when I came, I didn’t have a lot of experience coaching two games a week, but I had plenty as a player,” Iraola explained. “Now, it’s about making the right decisions regarding player fitness and freshness.” Iraola emphasizes that controlling the game isn’t just about possession; it’s about creating better scoring opportunities. In their recent 2-0 victory over Brighton, Liverpool held the ball for just 35.6% of the match but still emerged victorious. This season, they’ve become more direct, averaging nearly 25 long balls per Premier League game, up from 21 last year. They are also applying more pressure in the opposition half and increasing their sprint counts, showing a greater intensity overall. Captain Virgil van Dijk highlighted this shift in intensity earlier this week. "The word 'intensity' has been mentioned so often, and there’s a kind of chaos involved now," he said. “If we press high, it can create one-on-one opportunities, which is the kind of intensity we’re aiming for.” While there’s still room for improvement, Iraola is keen to push his team further. Arriving late to a press conference due to an extended training session, he stated there’s always another level to reach. If they can tap into that potential against Arsenal, the discussions about a title challenge will only intensify.
