Liverpool Overcomes Chelsea in Penalty Drama to Advance in Carabao Cup
Chelsea likely sensed their fate as soon as the Carabao Cup clash at Anfield went to penalties. Historically, they’ve faced Liverpool in shoot-outs four times and lost each encounter. That record now stands at five, with Wesley Fofana’s painful miss flying into the Kop, sealing Liverpool's spot in the quarter-finals. But Fofana wasn’t the only one to falter. Chelsea’s ongoing penalty woes against Liverpool added yet another chapter to their storied history of defeats, including the 2007 Champions League semi-final and the 2022 FA and League Cup finals. Emmanuel Emegha had a golden chance to put Xabi Alonso’s side ahead, but his attempt was brilliantly saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili. Kostas Tsimikas, who famously scored the winning penalty at Wembley in 2022, also missed his chance to shine, sending his shot over the bar when Liverpool was just a kick away from victory. While Morgan Rogers and Cody Gakpo converted their penalties in regular time, Ryan Gravenberch and Valentin Barco couldn't find the net in the shoot-out. Former Liverpool stars Alonso and Jordan Henderson returned to Anfield, and their receptions were notably lukewarm compared to past visits with clubs like Real Madrid and Brentford. Henderson, in particular, faced a chorus of boos every time he touched the ball, while Alonso shared a warm moment with his childhood friend, Andoni Iraola, before kick-off. Both managers opted for surprising tactics in their line-ups, particularly in how they positioned their players. Lewis Koumas, part of seven changes by Iraola from the weekend's win over Brighton, took on a role on the right wing, while Gakpo led the attack. With João Pedro injured and Cole Palmer suspended, Alonso relied on veteran players, with Danny Welbeck supported by Henderson in an unexpected central role. The match was a lively affair, though it lacked clear chances until penalties were awarded within just a few minutes. Koumas received an early booking for a foul on Maxence Lacroix, who was trying to clear the ball. Rio Ngumoha excited the home fans with some dazzling runs, but Chelsea struggled to find the final pass. The first penalty came Chelsea's way when Moisés Caicedo was brought down by Ryan Gravenberch in the box after a clever pass from Malo Gusto. Henderson received boos as he picked up the ball but handed it off to Rogers, who coolly slotted it home, sending Mamardashvili the wrong way. Liverpool quickly responded with a penalty of their own after a handball by Fofana during a corner. Gakpo stepped up and confidently converted, putting the ball low into the corner as the Chelsea keeper dove the wrong way. Referee Darren England made the right calls on both penalties without needing VAR, which added a layer of excitement to the match. However, Iraola might have had a different view if Rogers had scored after seemingly handling the ball, but Mamardashvili’s save spared any controversy. Chelsea needed to seize control as Liverpool’s star players were introduced from the bench. Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola entered the fray in the 59th minute, with the game still finely balanced. Gusto garnered attention for his theatrics after contact with Penders, who sought to redeem himself after a costly error against Tottenham. Liverpool’s central defender played a key role in thwarting Chelsea's attempts, with Joe Gomez providing a fine cross. Rogers had his moments but was often stifled by Liverpool’s defense. Penders made a crucial save from a close-range header by Ronald Araujo, keeping the visitors in the game. Rogers was a constant threat, and Chelsea improved after their substitutions but couldn't find the breakthrough. Marco Palestra had a promising chance, but Mamardashvili showcased his skills with a fantastic save. Wirtz also had an opportunity late on, but his effort hit Levi Colwill and was cleared away. As the match progressed to penalties, Chelsea’s history with Liverpool loomed large, and unfortunately for them, it was a familiar script.
