Gary Neville has voiced his frustrations regarding Manchester United's current struggles, stating, "It feels like the club is stuck in a rut." With nine games without a win, Neville describes this period as a serious downturn in both results and overall performance.
United's latest setback came in a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea, marking their longest winless stretch since 1984. This alarming trend places the team in danger of slipping into the relegation zone before the upcoming international break.
Head coach Michael Carrick, however, remains optimistic about his position, affirming his intent to lead the squad into their Champions League clash against Roma on Tuesday.
Neville elaborated on United's woes, saying, "It's very difficult. When you're in this situation, you must dig in and maintain discipline, but right now, Manchester United can’t seem to do that. As soon as they concede, they crumble."
While some may point to glimpses of promise in their play, Neville is unconvinced. He argues that the inability to withstand pressure has been a significant issue, especially with challenging fixtures looming on the horizon.
"Any well-organized team will exploit their weaknesses," Neville warned, highlighting the threats posed by Roma and Aston Villa in the coming weeks, not to mention the daunting trip to Anfield shortly after.
On top of the team's overall struggles, Neville has particular criticism for Lisandro Martinez. The defender, who was sent off against Chelsea, has not impressed Neville, who remarked, "Every time I watch him, he seems to be at fault for a goal. Yesterday, he was responsible for two, and the first one was solely on him."
Neville added, "If I were giving away goals like he is, I wouldn't even want to do interviews. The amount of goals he concedes is astonishing, and the defense as a whole is simply not cutting it under pressure."
With a challenging schedule ahead, Manchester United will need to find their footing quickly or face even tougher questions in the weeks to come.
