Nashville SC made history on Saturday night, clinching their first Supporters’ Shield with a decisive 2-0 triumph over CF Montreal.
This victory not only solidified their status as the top team in MLS but also extended their unbeaten streak to an impressive seven matches, boasting a record of 5-0-2 during this stretch.
On the other hand, Montreal, with a disappointing record of 6-18-7, has now been officially eliminated from playoff contention after managing just one win in their last 11 outings.
The breakthrough for Nashville came in the 52nd minute, courtesy of Sam Surridge, who capitalized on his own rebound. After Montreal’s 17-year-old goalkeeper, Samsy Keita, made a fantastic save on Surridge’s initial header from a Reed Baker-Whiting cross, the striker was quick to react, placing the ball into the far corner for his 18th goal of the season.
Hany Mukhtar doubled Nashville's lead in the 76th minute. He intercepted a clearance from defender Brayan Vera, raced into the box, and unleashed a shot that deflected off Keita before finding the back of the net from the top right corner.
Mukhtar came close to matching Surridge’s tally just minutes later, but Keita made another impressive save, deflecting his attempt away.
The young goalkeeper was tested early, coming off his line in the second minute to deny Surridge a chance, setting the tone for a slow offensive start where both teams managed only one shot in the first 18 minutes.
As the first half progressed, Montreal began to find their rhythm but struggled to convert chances. Vera’s header from a corner in the 21st minute narrowly missed the far post, while Nashville's Brian Schwake confidently saved a free kick from Alexis Sanchez ten minutes later.
In the 33rd minute, Dante Sealy surged down the left flank but sent his shot soaring over the net, leaving the match scoreless at halftime.
