Noni Madueke: The Arsenal Star Redefining His Game
Noni Madueke was left frustrated after missing a one-on-one chance late in Arsenal's narrow 1-0 victory against Hull City. Laying on the turf with his head in his hands, it was clear that this is a player striving for excellence, as noted by manager Mikel Arteta, who called him a "different Noni." With Bukayo Saka sidelined due to injury, Madueke has stepped up to fill the void impressively. Arteta acknowledged the winger's disappointment but also highlighted his pivotal role in Martin Ødegaard's goal, as Madueke's shot led to the captain's score. His 13 touches in the opposition box were the highest for any Arsenal player this season, showcasing his attacking intent. Madueke's performance was marked by a season-high tally of shots and chances created, totaling eight, alongside five successful dribbles. While Arsenal's overall display wasn't their best, Madueke was the main source of their attacking threat. The 24-year-old has quickly become a key player for Arteta, especially after starting in both the recent match and a midweek game in Prague, where he netted the opener. His readiness to take on more responsibility has been evident, particularly after being excluded from Thomas Tuchel's England squad. Instead of letting it affect him, Madueke used the time to improve his game. Arteta praised his dedication, noting how he took the initiative to train independently during the last international break, transforming himself into a player ready to seize opportunities. Madueke's relentless quest for self-improvement is nothing new. He has consistently worked on his skills with specialist coach Saul Isaksson-Hurst since his youth days at PSV Eindhoven, earning a reputation as a "mentality monster." Arteta believes there's still room for growth in Madueke's game, particularly in decision-making, but it’s clear the winger's execution has become sharper. He is now delivering with more clarity and composure in the final third, resulting in a significant increase in his chance creation. This season, Madueke's average of 3.57 chances created per 90 minutes puts him at the top of the Premier League, surpassing even Manchester City's Rayan Cherki. His expected assists are impressive too, ranking just behind Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku. Madueke has proven his versatility, contributing effectively from both wings. In the match against Hull, he showcased his ability with a left-footed cross nearly converted by Gabriel and a right-footed cut-back for Christos Tzolis. His decision-making has also improved, allowing him to make the right choices more consistently. The stats reflect this growth; Madueke is losing possession less frequently than last season, with his dribble success rate rising from 50% to 55% and his pass success rate skyrocketing from 78% to 87%. Interestingly, he’s not just opting for easier passes; he’s attempting a higher percentage of forward passes. A brilliant diagonal ball to Declan Rice in the Hull match exemplified his ability to create opportunities from deep. Madueke's crossing has notably improved too, with his completion rate rising from 14% to 33%. This all points to a much-improved end product as he matures into a reliable player. Making his 100th Premier League appearance against Hull, with 67 of those coming for Arsenal, Madueke has silenced critics who questioned his decision to join as a backup to Saka. Under Arteta's guidance, he continues to develop, and the manager is keen to see him maintain this upward trajectory. "Now that you're in this position, you need to hold onto it and enhance it," Arteta said. "Let’s see what he can achieve during this break."
