An investigation by the Football Association and South Wales Police may be on the horizon after alleged homophobic chants disrupted Newport County's FA Cup match against Walsall at Rodney Parade.
During the second half of Saturday's game, referee Robert Massey-Ellis paused play for five minutes to address the situation. He engaged with the managers and captains from both sides and made gestures towards the home supporters near the dugouts.
The club could find itself facing disciplinary action from the FA, as such discriminatory chants violate FA regulations and are categorized as a hate crime.
Newport's manager, Hayden Mullins, commented post-match that he had not personally heard any offensive language but firmly stated that such actions are unacceptable in football.
"I think it was homophobic stuff that was heard in the crowd, which is not on. We don't condone it," Mullins expressed.
He added, "It was reported to the stewards and then to either the linesman or fourth official. I didn't hear anything, but he [the referee] has gone down the right channels, which is good. No-one wants that."
Mullins praised the referee for his decision to stop the game, saying, "He chose to stop play and wanted to deal with it pretty thoroughly. He wanted to make sure he was on top of that and had the right things in place, which is key."
