Swansea City Under Fire: Matos Calls for Reflection After QPR Rout
Swansea City's struggles continued with a painful loss at QPR, marking their second consecutive defeat and only their third in the Championship this season. After a staggering 5-0 loss, head coach Vitor Matos believes it's crucial for his squad to reflect on their performance. Richard Kone's hat-trick in the opening 15 minutes set the tone for a shocking afternoon at Loftus Road for the high-flying Swans. Despite the setback, Swansea still holds onto a spot in the automatic promotion places. Matos, however, is taking this defeat seriously, insisting that the team must learn from their mistakes. "It’s essential for us to improve and return to our previous standards," Matos told BBC Sport Wales. "We need to bounce back from this situation." The coach acknowledged that while their earlier performances weren't flawless, they certainly don’t diminish the need to analyze this game. "We must listen to this performance and understand where we can do better," he added. Before facing QPR, Swansea had only lost twice in their first 11 league matches, while their opponents had struggled, winning just once in their last seven outings. However, the Swans lacked their usual resilience as Kone’s goals, along with two set-piece strikes from defender Jimmy Dunne, handed QPR a dominant win. Matos recalled that his previous heaviest defeats as Swansea's boss were 3-0 losses to Coventry and Ipswich last season. This latest result is the club's worst league defeat since a similar 5-0 drubbing at Southampton back in December 2023. "QPR came out with great energy, while we were lacking in concentration and organization at critical moments," Matos remarked. "They were very clinical with their chances, which hit our confidence hard. Ultimately, it's my responsibility to improve the team." In a further blow to the squad, Matos confirmed that winger Moussa Yeo, who had shown promising form, is now sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained in the previous game against West Ham. Yeo is expected to be out for two to three weeks. "Losing Moussa is tough for us, but we have depth in our squad and will find ways to adjust," he said. This injury news comes just as Ronald was ruled out for up to eight weeks with his own hamstring issue. Teenager Jeremy Monga, recently signed on loan from Manchester City, was included in the matchday squad for the first time but did not see any action on the field.
