Tarik Muharemovic has made quite the splash at Leeds United since his arrival in July, following just one season in Europe’s top leagues.
His debut against RB Leipzig showcased his potential, particularly when he executed a tackle that sent the Elland Road crowd into a frenzy. Former Leeds boss Simon Grayson recalls thinking, 'You’re going to go down well with this club' after that electrifying moment.
The 23-year-old defender joined Leeds for a hefty £34.1 million from Sassuolo, becoming the club's most expensive defender in history. He stepped into the void left by Pascal Struijk, who was sold to Brighton for £20 million.
Initially, some fans were skeptical about the price tag for a player with limited top-flight experience. One supporter remarked, 'He’s the right profile but the price is a bit steep,' while another added, 'Seems like another sensible addition although the fee is eye-watering.'
Fast forward three months into his five-year deal, and the conversation has shifted dramatically. Muharemovic's impact has been so substantial that discussions are already swirling about how long Leeds can hold onto him, especially after his standout performances at the World Cup with Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Lucy Ward, a former Leeds striker, noted, "Muharemovic has done so well that there will already be clubs looking at him, trying to nab him over the next few months." Jonny Buchan from the BBC echoed this sentiment, expressing concerns that he could be a 'one-year wonder' if he continues to shine in the Premier League.
Interest from giants like Barcelona, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Inter Milan is already brewing. Muharemovic has garnered acclaim for his solid defensive style and impressive aerial skills, contributing to Leeds having the second-best defensive record in the league, just behind Arsenal.
Grayson, who led Leeds from 2008 to 2012, believes that a longer stay at Elland Road could be beneficial for Muharemovic. "I’m not naive enough to think he doesn’t dream of playing for the biggest clubs," he said, but added, "Sometimes a player just feels at home with a club, and I sense that with Muharemovic. He seems to love Leeds and its supporters."
The fans have certainly taken a shine to him, not just for his tenacity on the pitch. After Leeds thrashed Newcastle 4-1 in September, he passionately declared into the cameras, "United are back, United are back!" His nickname, 'The Bosnian Brick Wall,' reflects both his defensive prowess and the admiration he’s earned from the supporters.
But what does the future hold for Muharemovic? Born in Slovenia and raised in Austria, he carved his path through Italy before landing in Yorkshire. He faced the media spotlight during a controversial incident at the World Cup, where a foul he suffered resulted in a red card for US player Folarin Balogun—an event that made headlines.
Muharemovic’s family history is rich, with his parents having fled Bosnia during the war, eventually settling in Austria. He made his professional debut at 18 for Wolfsberger in the Austrian Bundesliga and quickly caught the eyes of Italian giants Juventus, where he trained alongside legends like Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.
Though he never made a senior appearance for Juventus, he gained invaluable experience that has shaped his game. After a stint at Sassuolo, where he helped the team secure an 11th-place finish in Serie A, he’s now ready to make his mark in England.
His multilingual abilities—speaking Bosnian, German, English, Italian, and Slovenian—reflect his diverse upbringing. His father, Rasim, has become a familiar face among the Leeds fans, attending every game, home and away.
"My dad loves it," Muharemovic said. "He comes to every game, every away game. In Italy, he also went to all the home games and some of the away ones."
With his impressive start at Leeds, the question remains: when the season wraps up, will Tarik Muharemovic be in the running for the signing of the season?
