Finally, the invincible run comes to an end. Manchester City’s flawless start is halted, much to the delight of Manchester United, who equalized late in the game thanks to a goal from Elisabeth Terland in an exhilarating Manchester derby.
Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw had given City the lead with a powerful strike in the second half, seemingly putting the defending champions on course to maintain their top position. But United, under the guidance of Eva Olid, rallied back to earn a deserved point, with Terland finding the net in the dying moments after a scramble in the box. This late goal saw City slip to second in the WSL standings, now trailing Chelsea on goal difference, adding a twist to the title race.
United showcased significant improvement compared to last season’s encounters, where City triumphed 3-0 in both matches. This time, they posed a serious challenge to their rivals, with Andrée Jeglertz’s team feeling they might have sealed the win earlier in the second half. Yet, few would argue that a draw was an unjust result given the overall performance.
In the first half, City’s slick passing and dynamic play, particularly down the left with Lauren Hemp and the creativity of Yui Hasegawa and Aoba Fujino, made it seem like they were destined to score. Fujino came close with a shot that whisked just wide, and Hemp saw her attempt sail over the net.
However, United proved resilient and had their fair share of chances in the opening 45 minutes. They nearly took the lead when Terland failed to connect cleanly with a cutback from Andrea Medina, who had initially looked set to shoot herself.
The hosts also came close, with Ella Toone’s shot being saved and Jess Park’s long-range effort being thwarted by Ayaka Yamashita. Jade Rose’s pace was key in thwarting several of United’s counterattacks, showcasing her defensive prowess.
Around the hour mark, Park nearly broke the deadlock with a fierce shot that clipped the top of the crossbar, following a brilliant save from Yamashita to deny Terland in a one-on-one situation. At the other end, Shaw tested Phallon Tullis-Joyce with a close-range effort that was expertly saved. It wasn’t long before last season’s top scorer struck with a low shot that proved too quick for Tullis-Joyce, putting City ahead.
Shaw, who had endured some jeers from the home crowd after a few robust challenges, celebrated in front of the away supporters, many of whom waved inflatable bananas in delight. She almost doubled her tally shortly after, but her rising shot went just over the bar.
United kept pressing and squandered a golden chance with less than 15 minutes left when Julia Zigiotti shot over from close range. Shaw remained a threat, glancing a header wide from a City corner, while Fujino’s long-range shot was parried away. Just when it seemed City would secure their seventh consecutive league win, United struck back.
Le Tissier launched a hopeful ball into the box after a short free-kick, which Shaw headed clear, but it fell perfectly for Terland. The Norwegian made no mistake, smashing the ball into the net and sending the home fans into a frenzy, along with the United bench celebrating the crucial equalizer.
City now face a challenging week ahead, with a trip to third-placed London City looming after a midweek Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain. On the other hand, United will take heart from this late goal, marking a significant moment for Olid’s side. After earlier losses to London City and Chelsea, this performance against their local rivals shows they are rapidly evolving, and while they may not be in the title race just yet, they’ll be pleased with their competitive spirit against Jeglertz’s team.
