Could this be the moment Tottenham Hotspur starts to turn things around?
Their 2-0 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday has propelled them to 12th place in the Premier League, marking their highest position since early January. After struggling through back-to-back seasons finishing 17th, there are glimmers of hope that Roberto de Zerbi's squad is finding its footing.
This win was significant, not just for the points, but because it was only the second time Spurs have secured back-to-back league victories in over 40 games. The standout performances from James Maddison and Mathys Tel were pivotal in achieving this result.
Spurs dominated possession, holding onto the ball for 68% of the match—an impressive statistic not seen since April 2025. The victory felt well-earned, despite Chelsea's misfortunes, including an own goal from goalkeeper Mike Penders and a red card for Cole Palmer.
After a tough start to the season, where it took seven attempts to register their first league win, Tottenham displayed a transformed attitude compared to their early struggles. De Zerbi expressed his optimism, even in light of another injury to Maddison, crediting a team meeting earlier this month for their recent improvement.
"After the Manchester United game, we had a big meeting," he shared. "We removed the masks and spoke honestly. I believe that was the turning point for us. We’ve changed the spirit of the group and improved our performances."
Rob Green, a former Chelsea keeper, praised Spurs’ performance on BBC Radio 5 Live, stating it was a perfect day for the North London club.
"They looked controlled and comfortable on the ball. Results like this can really boost team morale. With players returning from injury, there’s a sense that Tottenham might just be on their way back."
De Zerbi took charge of Spurs in March 2026 when the club was in turmoil, just above the relegation zone. After securing their safety, the club invested over £300 million in summer signings to restore their competitive edge.
Now, after a shaky start, the fans are beginning to feel hopeful once again. Martin Keown, a former Arsenal defender, commented on BBC Sport, calling Spurs’ latest performance a significant statement.
"Maddison was superb in midfield, full of creativity and bravery. Tel was impressive on the left, and the entire team managed the game excellently," he noted.
De Zerbi celebrated with the traveling fans, a stark contrast to the atmosphere when he first arrived, where players were visibly lacking confidence.
It was fitting that Mathys Tel, who has faced scrutiny since his £30 million move from Bayern Munich, scored the decisive goal.
"It’s special to win at Chelsea, a place where we’ve struggled in the past. We showed great mentality today and need to keep this momentum going," he said.
Matheus Fernandes added, "We’re here to shift the club’s mentality. We want to challenge the top teams and deliver victories for our fans."
Spurs made headlines this summer by breaking their transfer record multiple times, bringing in key players like Jan Paul van Hecke and Sandro Tonali. All three made a notable impact against Chelsea, with De Zerbi praising their performances.
"I think it was Tonali's best game since joining us. Each player contributed significantly, especially our wingers, who made the difference today," he remarked.
As Tottenham looks to build on this victory, the return of Maddison, who missed much of last season due to injury, could be crucial in their quest for improvement.
