Federico Valverde delivered a sensational long-range effort to give Real Madrid a dramatic 3-2 win over AEK Athens on Wednesday night in the Champions League. This victory ensures Madrid maintains their flawless start in the group stage.
The match was a true rollercoaster, with José Mourinho’s side twice coming from behind against the spirited Greek champions. Aboubakary Koïta opened the scoring for AEK after just 12 minutes, but Jude Bellingham quickly equalized with a brilliant flick for the 15-time champions.
As the game wore on, Stavros Pilios put AEK back in front with 15 minutes remaining. Yet, Kylian Mbappé responded almost immediately, leveling the score again and setting the stage for Valverde’s stunning late winner.
This victory marks Real Madrid's seventh consecutive win across all competitions, showcasing their formidable form.
Mourinho opted to start Vinícius Júnior on the left wing, following his suspension that kept him out of the last two La Liga matches. The hosts burst out of the blocks at the Agia Sophia Stadium, and it was no surprise when they took an early lead.
Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was tested early, making a superb save from former Madrid striker Luka Jovic before Koïta struck, curling a shot past him at the near post.
Despite AEK's energetic start, Madrid began to assert themselves as the match progressed. Mbappé saw a shot sail over the bar, and Bellingham had a goal disallowed for offside. However, soon after, he found the net with a clever flick from Cucurella’s low cross, leveling the score.
Cucurella continued to threaten, testing AEK's goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli, while Bernardo Silva missed a header just before halftime, as Madrid began to dominate.
The second half saw Brignoli deny Éder Militão with a strong save, while Lazaros Rota made a crucial block to keep Madrid at bay. Mbappé was close to scoring again, firing a shot just wide, and the AEK defense kept him frustrated.
In the 75th minute, AEK regained the lead when Koïta set up Pilios, who slotted the ball under Courtois. But Madrid reacted swiftly. Bellingham assisted Denzel Dumfries, who crossed for Mbappé to finish, marking his fourth goal in this Champions League campaign.
In a thrilling finale, substitute Endrick put Mbappé through, but Brignoli made a stunning save to deny him. Just when it seemed Madrid might settle for a draw, Valverde unleashed a powerful shot in the 92nd minute, securing a memorable win and preserving their unbeaten record.
