Yellow Card Drama: Players Facing Suspensions in the Premier League

In a twist that adds to the season's intensity, Hull City's Matt Crooks and Aston Villa's Matty Cash have become the inaugural players to earn a one-match suspension for racking up five yellow cards in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.
Crooks will be sidelined for Hull's upcoming clash against Arsenal after his booking during the match against Ipswich, while Cash will miss Aston Villa's showdown with Manchester United due to his caution for a foul against Fulham.
The rules are straightforward: players who collect five yellow cards before their team plays its 19th league match face a one-match ban. As the league progresses, maintaining discipline becomes crucial.
A handful of other players currently sit on four bookings after nine rounds, including Vitaly Janelt and Harry Maguire. They need to tread carefully to avoid a suspension before the season reaches its halfway mark.
Once teams have played 19 matches, the yellow card limit jumps to ten. Players hitting that mark before their club’s 32nd match will incur a two-match suspension, with further penalties for those who reach 15 or 20 cards.
A 15-card threshold leads to a three-match ban, while players who hit 20 will face decisions from a regulatory commission about their suspensions. Notably, the yellow card count doesn’t reset until the end of the season.
In the lower leagues, similar rules apply, but with 46 matches in a season, players must avoid ten yellow cards before their 37th match to dodge a two-match ban. Unlike the Premier League, the yellow card counts reset after the season, excluding playoff matches.
As it stands, the following players need to be cautious to avoid a yellow card that would trigger a suspension: Igor Thiago, Oli McBurnie, Pascal Gross, Ethan Ampadu, and others.
Meanwhile, here are the players already set to miss their next games due to suspensions: Matt Crooks and Matty Cash for yellow cards, along with several players like Max Dowman and Lisandro Martinez for red card offenses.
With the stakes high, the drama continues as the season unfolds.
