Altrincham Aims for Another FA Cup Upset Against Notts County

Altrincham is known for pulling off stunning upsets in the FA Cup, and they’re looking to add another chapter to that storied history this weekend.
Graham Heathcote, a club legend with over 500 appearances during their golden years in the '70s and '80s, believes the current squad can draw inspiration from the club's past. "I genuinely think we were the best non-league team ever. Our history shows that anything is possible," he shared.
Currently sitting seventh in the National League, Altrincham has a remarkable record of defeating 17 Football League teams in the FA Cup—more than any other non-league club. Heathcote played a pivotal role during his time, helping the team reach the third round of the FA Cup four years in a row from 1978 to 1982, all while juggling a part-time career.
Reflecting on those days, Heathcote recalled, "It was an unbelievable achievement because back then, teams didn’t send out weakened sides like they often do now." Now in his 70s and still residing in Altrincham, he proudly noted that his team had a better FA Cup record than any side in the lower divisions during that time.
Heathcote was central to several iconic moments, including a memorable third-round draw against Everton at Goodison Park in 1975 and another against a star-studded Spurs side in 1979. He even scored a penalty at Anfield against Liverpool in 1981, marking an era where Altrincham also clinched the FA Trophy twice.
What was the key to their cup success? "We had this determination, and we became feared at that time. You reach your level in football, but on a one-off occasion, you'd be amazed at how high you can raise your game. It’s all about getting your mindset right on the day," he explained.
A lingering sense of injustice also fueled their drive. Although they twice triumphed in what was then the Alliance Premier League, a cruel ballot system denied them a spot in the Football League in 1980 by just a single vote—before automatic promotion was introduced.
Heathcote missed the club's most significant upset, which came in 1986 when Altrincham knocked out First Division Birmingham City at St Andrews—a moment still celebrated as one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history.
Fast forward four decades, and current manager Neil Gibson is keen to continue that legacy as they prepare to face Notts County in front of a live BBC audience, hoping to impress a packed Moss Lane crowd. Since taking over last year, Gibson has led the team to a strong start this season, putting them in contention for a playoff spot.
"This means a lot to us. It’s the spirit and essence of this club. We see this as a real opportunity, even though Notts County is a very good team. We want to create our own memorable moments, just like the fans remember from the past," he said.
Situated near the footballing giants of Manchester, Altrincham has to work hard to maintain its fanbase. This clash is a golden opportunity for the club, which only turned professional four years ago. "Many of our players are capable of playing at a higher level. This is a chance to showcase their talent against a club that was in the same league as us just three years ago," Gibson noted.
Gibson has his own cup heroics to draw from, having taken part in a memorable FA Cup upset against Notts County while playing for Southport 24 years ago. "Cups have always held a special place in my heart. We’re thrilled about this match and plan to give it our all. But you only remember these days if you come out on the right side of the result," he added.
The match against Notts County takes place on Saturday, November 7, at 17:30 GMT, and fans can catch it live on BBC Two and iPlayer.
As for Heathcote, who also managed Altrincham from 2002 to 2009, he faced challenges replicating his playing successes in the cup. However, his legacy continues through his son, Sam, who not only followed in his father’s footsteps at Altrincham but also helped them defeat League One Barnsley in 2015.
In an incredible twist, Sam was part of the Macclesfield squad that stunned Crystal Palace this year, marking one of the greatest FA Cup upsets in history.
"That far exceeded anything I've done," Heathcote remarked, proud of his family's connection to the competition.
