Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had a stern conversation with Max Dowman after the young forward received a red card during the team's penalty shoot-out defeat to Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup.
The 16-year-old was sent off late in the match, following a reaction to a tough tackle by Harrison Neal. As a result, he will face a three-match suspension.
Arteta, visibly frustrated, addressed Dowman as he exited the pitch. Speaking to the media on Friday, he shared that he had already cautioned the teenager about handling provocations before the game.
"I haven't seen the public reaction to my words, whether it’s been good or bad. But it’s important to understand the context of our relationship and what we discussed beforehand," Arteta explained.
He added, "You can have different reactions. If you watched my parents’ reactions to me some days, you might not like them either. But that’s just who I am."
Arteta confirmed that he had a follow-up conversation with Dowman on Thursday, stating there were no lingering issues. However, he emphasized the need for clarity regarding the expectations placed on the young player.
This isn’t the first time Dowman has faced disciplinary action; he was previously sent off while playing for the England U19s after enduring similar challenges in a match against the United States.
Reflecting on that incident, Arteta remarked, "These boys are 16, so that’s the level of response we’re seeing. Right or wrong, that’s how it goes."
Arteta also touched on the broader implications of Dowman's red card for the team. "When I don’t win, my reaction is pure anger. We need to be prepared for that. This is the reality we live in. We’re not in Disneyland; we’re competing at the highest level in the Premier League."
He continued, "We care for him deeply, but we also need to demand the same performance from him as we do from everyone else. He must earn his spot, just like the other players do."
Despite Arsenal appealing the red card, the Football Association upheld the ruling, leaving Arteta feeling disappointed. He concluded by acknowledging a fortunate outcome, stating, "We’re lucky he didn’t sustain a more serious injury."
