Carrick Stands Firm Amidst Manchester United Turmoil
Michael Carrick took a moment to express his apologies to the traveling fans after his side's disappointing defeat against Como midweek. The Manchester United manager has pushed back against the narrative that the club is unmanageable. Despite a grim streak of seven games without a win, Carrick is determined to turn things around ahead of Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Bournemouth. The fire is intensifying for Carrick, especially after comments from key players Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes criticized the club's recruitment strategies and his tactical choices. If Carrick were to part ways with the club, it would mark the third managerial change in as many seasons, adding to a troubling list of eight permanent managers since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013. The weight of expectations at Manchester United is amplified by the voices of former players and the rise of fan media, leading some to claim the club is almost impossible to manage. But Carrick had a succinct rebuttal: "No." He does, however, take issue with perceptions that his squad lacks effort and fails to press effectively when defending. Carrick has acknowledged that the team's performance in the 4-1 loss at Como was "unacceptable," but he contests the notion that they don’t press enough. "You’ve got to be careful with just saying 'not running'," he explained. "We’ve won a lot of games over time, and pressing is just one aspect of football. There are various interpretations of what pressing means. Sometimes it’s about playing to your strengths, not just chasing the ball." He emphasized that winning games isn’t solely defined by running stats, urging his team to return to the form they exhibited last season and at times this season. Despite stepping into the role before his former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Carrick and Solskjaer share a strong bond. The Norwegian made a trip to United’s training ground this summer to catch up with Carrick and his coaching staff. This week, Carrick revealed he has also been in touch with Sir Alex Ferguson, who remains a staple at matches as he nears his 85th birthday. Ferguson was the one who brought Carrick to the club from Tottenham in 2006 and managed him during his testimonial at Old Trafford in 2017. "I talk to both of them regularly," Carrick said. "There’s nothing new in that. I maintain a close relationship with both." Despite the adversity, Carrick holds firm in his belief that he can steer the ship back on course, but he acknowledges the need for his players to step up against Bournemouth. "I trust them completely, 100%," he asserted. "We must be a different team on Sunday. That’s our goal."
