Michael Carrick is set to continue as Manchester United's manager for the Champions League matchup against Roma on Tuesday, even after the team's frustrating 2-0 defeat to Chelsea.
That loss marked nine games without a win for United and their worst start to a season in 35 years, leaving them languishing in 17th place in the Premier League. The club's hierarchy plans to evaluate Carrick's future again during the international break, following the next league fixture against Aston Villa next Sunday.
Just last week, Carrick was on shaky ground as discussions took place at the training ground between director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada regarding his future. Ultimately, they decided to give the 45-year-old another chance to turn around United's fortunes.
Currently, the club is above the relegation zone only on goal difference, with seven points to their name. Despite the tough times, there is still some faith within the club that Carrick can steer the ship in the right direction, especially with the away fans showing their support even after the defeat at Stamford Bridge.
After the match, Carrick expressed confidence about his position, stating, "We’ve got to move forward and win matches; it’s as simple as that."
Should the club decide to part ways with Carrick, Eddie Howe is reportedly the frontrunner for the job. Initial contact has been made, and the former Newcastle manager appears open to the opportunity, pending negotiations that would involve a £3 million compensation fee.
Additionally, Julian Nagelsmann, the ex-coach of Bayern Munich and the German national team, is also a name of interest. Christopher Vivell, United's recruitment director, has previously collaborated with Nagelsmann at RB Leipzig, adding to his appeal.
