Copa del Rey Matches Postponed Following Tragic Train Crash
Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his shock over the tragic train crash and extended support to the victims and their families. As a fitting tribute, all 24 Copa del Rey matches set for Wednesday have been called off following the incident that occurred near Toledo, where more than 30 people lost their lives. The collision involved over 500 passengers, resulting in a derailment that has left the nation in mourning. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced that the decision to suspend the matches was made to stand in solidarity with those impacted. Five La Liga teams—Levante, Alaves, Valencia, Celta Vigo, and Real Betis—were scheduled to compete in the first round of the tournament. Meanwhile, heavyweights like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid won't enter the competition until the later rounds. Barcelona took to social media to share its heartfelt condolences. The club stated, "FC Barcelona expresses its deepest condolences to the victims of the serious railway accident between Los Yebenes and Urda (Toledo). We stand with the families and friends of those affected and wish a swift recovery to the injured." Real Madrid also expressed their sorrow through their official website, offering full support to emergency services involved in the rescue efforts. They conveyed their condolences to the families of the deceased and their solidarity with the injured, stating, "Real Madrid C. F. wishes to express its deepest sorrow over the tragic railway accident that occurred in the province of Toledo." While Wednesday's matches are postponed, the RFEF has confirmed that games scheduled for Thursday will proceed as planned, though a new schedule for the rescheduled matches has yet to be announced.
