Wrexham Looks to Turn the Tide Amid Championship Struggles

Wrexham has managed to secure only three victories from their 12 Championship matches this season, a worrying start for the Red Dragons.
Manager Phil Parkinson is keen to defy a peculiar trend where teams falling just short of playoff spots often face tough follow-up seasons. Historically, in the last 15 campaigns, only one club managed a top-half finish after finishing seventh, and that was Middlesbrough, who came fourth last season.
Last year, Wrexham achieved their highest-ever league finish by coming seventh, but they missed out on the playoffs after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough on the final day. Currently, the team is sitting in 17th place, having accrued just 14 points from 36 available.
"There’s clearly a statistic that shows teams that have been in the playoffs can find it challenging, but look at Derby—they narrowly missed out and have struggled since," Parkinson remarked.
He added, "While we take pride in our highest-ever finish in the Championship, we let an opportunity slip away on the final day. It’s our responsibility to change the narrative."
Despite the rocky start, Wrexham finds itself with the same points tally as this time last season. They’re eager to bounce back from a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers as they gear up to face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Friday night.
This match holds special significance, marking nearly five years since co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney attended their first Wrexham game. They witnessed a 3-2 defeat to Maidenhead United while the team was still in the National League back in October 2021.
Since Parkinson took charge in the summer of 2021, he’s led the club through three promotions and to its highest league finish, making the upcoming fixture against Sheffield United a testament to the remarkable journey Wrexham has undertaken.
"This week is particularly exciting with matches against Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, and Wolves on the horizon," Parkinson expressed.
Reflecting on the past, he said, "Five years ago, when Rob and Ryan were at Maidenhead, it was quite the introduction to the National League for them. They just experienced a fantastic draw with Torquay at the Racecourse over the weekend, and it’s been quite the journey since then."
