Everton secured a thrilling 3-1 victory over Coventry City at Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Thierno Barry shining brightly by scoring twice and providing an assist. The match was marked by a series of contentious VAR calls that went against Coventry, adding to the drama of an already intense encounter.
After a slow start, Coventry's Yann Gboho opened the scoring early in the second half, dancing through defenders and slotting the ball past Jordan Pickford. But Everton responded quickly, with Barry nodding in a well-placed cross from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall just minutes later.
The VAR drama intensified when Everton was denied two potential penalties in the first half. The first, a controversial hair pull by James Tarkowski on Caleb Yirenkyi, was reviewed and deemed not worthy of punishment. Shortly after the break, Taiwo Awoniyi went down in the box under a challenge from Vitalii Mykolenko, but VAR ruled that the foul occurred just outside the area.
Despite the setbacks, Coventry initially held the lead until Barry struck again, this time in a controversial moment where he bundled the ball into the net. Coventry players claimed he handled it, but VAR found no conclusive evidence to overturn the goal. VAR official Tim Wood stated, "Okay, that's [hit] his side, that's definitely not hand. Confirming on-field decision of goal."
Barry then turned from scorer to provider, threading a brilliant pass to Dewsbury-Hall, who found the net from a tight angle, capping off a superb night for Everton. This win propelled them into fifth place, even ahead of local rivals Liverpool for the time being.
Coventry, now just two points above the relegation zone, face a tough battle ahead. Their head coach, Frank Lampard, expressed his frustration post-match, criticizing the officiating. "The first-half decision on Tarkowski got checked. I thought the rules were clear. He's pulling on Yirenkyi's hair and I think it's a foul and a penalty," he lamented.
He didn't hold back on the second VAR incident either, stating, "Taiwo's foot is entering the box; that should have been a penalty. I'm not trying to just moan about it, but big decisions like these can change the game's outcome."
Commenting on Barry's second goal, Lampard added, "I do think it touches his hand. It’s difficult for VAR to overturn that when it’s not clear and obvious. It brushes his fingers, but was it deliberate? That's the tricky part."
Jamie Redknapp from Sky Sports echoed the sentiment, noting that Coventry was left feeling hard done by in a match where the officiating could have swung things in their favor. "Everton got the points today, but the VAR decisions definitely changed the complexity of the game," he concluded.
