FA Cup Fever: Saturday Showdowns and Premier League Highlights
⚽️ Stay tuned for live updates as Saturday's football unfolds. ⚽️ Live scores | Full tables | Follow us on TikTok | Mail Barry In the Premier League, Thierno Barry was the star for Everton, scoring twice to help his team stage a comeback against Coventry City. With some questionable officiating playing a role, Everton climbed to fifth place in the standings. Andy Hunter brings you all the action from Hill Dickinson Stadium. Yesterday, John Brewin gave us a sneak peek in his Football Daily email, highlighting the weekend’s first round FA Cup games. He focused on his beloved Macc, featuring a 40-year-old cult hero playing for the lowest-ranked team in the competition, alongside the club that claims to be London’s oldest. The early rounds of the FA Cup are always the most exciting. This long weekend, 31 ties will kick off at 3pm GMT, and there’s no VAR to complicate matters. As teams from the lower tiers of the Football League join the fray, all eyes are on those non-league clubs striving for glory. In a compelling matchup, Macclesfield will face Mansfield. Last January, Macclesfield pulled off an incredible upset by eliminating Crystal Palace, the defending champions, in the third round. Coach John Rooney’s National League North squad is heading over to take on Mansfield, a task that often requires Macclesfield fans to clarify their town’s identity. Their sporting director, Keith Curle, is a former Mansfield manager, adding a personal touch to this encounter. Another intriguing clash sees Bradford City host Marine, a team that some argue represents true football culture. As Marine heads to Bradford, they’ll be looking to bounce back after a series of tough results following Graham Alexander’s move to Preston. At Burton’s Pirelli Stadium, fans will be eager to see the return of Billy Sharp at 76 years old. This legendary striker, who is the Championship's all-time leading scorer, is back with AFC Rushden & Diamonds for a one-off appearance, chasing his 300th career goal after leaving Doncaster just one shy of that milestone. Plymouth Argyle will welcome Alvechurch, a club from a Worcestershire village. Alvechurch is known for its connection to Alan “Smudger” Smith, who once played for the England squad. Meanwhile, Plymouth aims to replicate their memorable third-round victory over Liverpool two seasons ago. Cray Wanderers, claiming to be London’s oldest football club, will take on high-flying Stockport County, while Peterborough prepares for a family affair as they host Reading, with manager Robbie Savage facing off against his son Charlie. In the Championship, Stoke City managed to equalize against Portsmouth thanks to Jack McGlynn’s goal, while Norwich City scored two quick goals at Ashton Gate, taking a commanding 3-0 lead against Bristol City. Over in the Women’s Super League, the top two teams are in action today. Manchester City leads West Ham 1-0 at halftime, while Chelsea is locked in a 1-1 draw with Everton. In the Premier League, it's been a tense first half with Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur still scoreless at Elland Road. Leeds felt they should’ve had a penalty, but they can count themselves lucky not to have seen Jayden Bogle sent off. With just two top-flight matches kicking off at 3pm, Arsenal is set to host Hull City at the Emirates, while Fulham welcomes Newcastle United to Craven Cottage along the scenic Thames. As the FA Cup excitement brews, there are also plenty of Championship matchups to keep fans engaged. Let the football festivities begin!
