Scotland Sees Welsh Withdraw, Welcomes Porteous Back
Stephen Welsh has been sidelined from the Scotland squad, paving the way for Ryan Porteous to make his return as they prepare for the Nations League clash. The Swansea City defender was initially feared to have sustained a serious knee injury during a challenge against Ebou Adams in a recent match against Portsmouth. However, after medical assessments on Thursday, it turned out that the 26-year-old had not suffered any major damage, and there was hope he could feature in Saturday's game against Birmingham City. Despite these encouraging signs, the Scottish FA confirmed that Welsh would not be part of the squad for their upcoming fixtures against North Macedonia on Friday and Switzerland on Monday, November 16. Welsh has collected four caps since Sebastien Pocognoli took the reins as Scotland's head coach this summer, showcasing his growing presence in the national team. In contrast, Ryan Porteous, who is 27, last represented Scotland under Steve Clarke in March 2025, earning his 13th cap as a substitute in a Nations League playoff victory over Greece. After leaving Watford for Los Angeles last August, he has been active this season, contributing to 35 appearances for the club currently sitting sixth in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer. With the pressure mounting, Scotland aims to secure at least four points from their final two group matches to keep their hopes of promotion alive.
