Stoke City made a statement with a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Portsmouth, thanks to goals from Jack McGlynn and Ben Wilmot. After a sluggish first half, Stoke managed to turn the tide and secure their fifth consecutive away win.
Portsmouth struck first with Tyrese Shade's beautiful curling shot just six minutes into the match. However, Stoke's resolve shone through as McGlynn took advantage of a fumbled cross by goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid, and Wilmot headed in a rebound to seal the comeback.
This victory temporarily lifted Stoke to the top of the Championship, overtaking Middlesbrough, who were set to face Watford later in the day. Yet, the race for the summit remains tight with Birmingham and Swansea also in the mix.
In another thrilling encounter, Wrexham managed to hold Wolves to a 1-1 draw, denying the visitors a chance to take the top spot. Adam Armstrong gave Wolves the lead with a strike in the 25th minute, but Lewis O’Brien responded just two minutes later, equalizing for Wrexham and ensuring they extended their unbeaten run to six matches.
The match was particularly special for Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who witnessed only the seventh league meeting between the two clubs in over a century.
Meanwhile, Norwich City put on an impressive display at Ashton Gate, demolishing Bristol City with a resounding 5-0 victory. Paris Maghoma opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, and Norwich never looked back.
The Canaries added a second shortly after halftime, with Jason Knight inadvertently directing a header to Harry Darling, who headed it past the keeper. Maghoma then turned provider for Andre Brooks, who made it 3-0 before substitute Jovon Makama scored the fourth. Mathias Kvistgaarden capped off the rout with an 80th-minute penalty, much to the chagrin of the home fans who directed chants at Bristol City manager Michael Skubala.
As for the afternoon fixtures, Middlesbrough aimed to reclaim their spot at the top against struggling Watford, while Birmingham and Swansea, both tied in the playoff chase, clashed at St Andrew’s.
In Friday night action, Derby County celebrated their first home win of the season with a comeback 3-1 victory over Bolton. After trailing at halftime due to Rúben Rodrigues’s goal, Derby responded emphatically after the break.
Ryan Nyambe leveled the score just 39 seconds into the second half with his first career goal, followed by Jack Robinson putting Derby ahead moments later. Rhian Brewster added a late third to secure a much-needed victory, with manager John Eustace praising his players for their resilience and strong second-half performance.
